FunFlatsFishing
What are the pros and cons or each? My Pathfinder has a jack plate as do most MBG boats most likely because of the transom height but most of the custom bay boats around here (Gause, Avenger, Dorado, etc..) all have Porta Brackets. Outside of the further set back of the Porta Bracket are there any other strengths?
geeviam
I have no experience with this type of transom jack but have to say I'm just not seeing the benefits. The more you lift, the less setback you get - which is backwards to me. Pump is in the boat, not self contained in the jack. Setback choice of 17", 21" & 26" seems a bit far back for flats skiffs and bay boats. Does not mount with the standard B.I.A. transom bolt pattern? Correct me if I'm wrong. FunFlatsFishing
My jack plate pump is in the boat. Only the cylinder is contained in the jack plate. Similar to a porta bracket
geeviam
The jack plate pump located in the boat is not a bad thing, if necessary for a particular setup. It would not be a deal breaker for me.
FunFlatsFishing
Correct. It isn't a deal breaker at all considering I also have two power pole pumps, a salt water wash down pump and three live well pumps all rigged next to it. mulligan
Those custom boats you mentioned have a different transom style, different style boat altogether. If if you are just comparing a porta and jackplate the difference is just setbacks and lift
geeviam
Good point Mulligan. FunFlatsFishing, in all fairness, I was comparing the Porta Bracket as a jack plate alternative on boats like ours. If compared as an add-on to, or replacement of a fixed transom bracket, on a boat without an outboard transom cutout, or a boat that was formerly an inboard, I can see the benefits of the Porta Bracket. It would be great to have the hydraulic adjustment and the ability to lift the motor completely out of the water, especially on a boat that stays in the water for long periods of time.
