F90 RF16 performance data Dang sure somewhere I found somthing similar for the F70 version but cant find it anymore. Has anyone got the RF16 with a 70 4 stroke and would like to share their findings? They don't exactly fly onto plane with a 90, so I can only think what the 70 would be like. A friend demo'd a ranger phantom with an etec 60 or 75, and a Yamaha f70 and said the holes hot and power was way better on the etec. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
browndog Posted September 26, 2016 Author Report Share Posted September 26, 2016 I like the weight of the F70 being 257lbs. Has to be a pay off there given the F90 is 366lbs. The F70 also revs out a bit higher. The data I saw with the F70 on a RF16 was with a 4 blade prop and thet liked it a lot. I will find it someplace. browndog Posted September 27, 2016 Author Report Share Posted September 27, 2016 I tend to agree. I have fished on a Hells Bay Boca Grande that had the F70 fitted. Admittedly it is a lighter rig but it is 18' and 6'6" beam. The rig had no probs with 3 men and gear. We were hitting 30knots and maybe a bit over at WOT. The owner said they liked the economy of the F70. Also saw seen one that had a C80 2 stroke on it and that apparently went very sweet. LarryH Posted September 29, 2016 Report Share Posted September 29, 2016 I'm on the fence. On one hand the RF16 easilly fits my needs. But I struggle with the heavy F90 or the potential anemic F70. So, I find myself agreeing with the better informed that the RF18 with the SHO115 has better weight / HP balance. Personally, I've had boats with the minimum hp needed and will never do that again. Now I go max, or close to it, and I'm not a speed demon (I bet I spend 90% of my time in Manatee Zones or No Wake Zones), but it's always good to have the power when you need it. wayne Posted September 29, 2016 Report Share Posted September 29, 2016 I have a 17 hpx with the older heavier F90, the weight is worth the extra HP... It's really a de-tuned 115, so it's very torquey with a lot of midrange power... the speed is perfect with a 90, fast enough to keep you happy, slow enough to keep you safe... The F115 and the SHO are lighter, in my experience passengers start getting nervous around 40mph.... The F90 pushes me 42 loadd to the hilt (PP, 24 TM, GEAR, ).. Even with all that and 3 people I still hit over 40.... I've seen 45 empty... I'd like to have a Merc pro xs on the back, but it would put me up into the 55 range and I'd hardly ever use it. . It swings the same prop as the F90, it just does it a little faster (2.00:1 vs 2.27:1 gear ratio). They are nearly identical in weight. I think the 2 stoke get around 5 knots more speed. wayne Posted September 30, 2016 Report Share Posted September 30, 2016 I don't know my hewes very well, but the 2 stroke 90 on an HPX swings a 17" prop where a 4 stroke swings a 19... 2 stroke will run low 40's light. 4 stroke runs mid 40s light... The torque in the newer outboards makes them much stronger than the old 2 strokes. I went from a Yamaha 2 stroke 90, and it's night and day.
