Big Dave
A line in Ray Wylie Hubbard's song Mother Blues goes "And the days that I keep my gratitude higher than my expectations, well, I have really good days." Yesterday was the summer solstice, our longest day of the year and the first day of astronomical summer in the Northern Hemisphere. I was very grateful to spend the day on the water in the Ten Thousand Islands backcountry with my good friend and fishing partner Mike (InTheSlot12). It was a really good day. Conditions led me to think that Saturday would be an excellent day, with very high activity forecast. New moon June 21 with high tidal coefficient, high tide at 4:11 a.m. (Onion Key, Lostmans River), low at 11:04 a.m., high at 3:01 p.m.). Sunrise was at 6:35 am (nautical twilight 5:38 am) with the sunset 8:17 pm. The weather overnight was expected to be partly to mostly cloudy, scattered t-storms, low 75, winds light and variable. On Saturday we anticipated scattered t-storms in the am, high around 90, winds SE at 5-10. The pressure was steady around 30. The weatherman got it right! Snook have been very plentiful this year and yesterday was no exception. We fished top water plugs and hard baits early (Zara Spook puppy in bone color and MirroLure Catch 2000 Jr. in mullet color) and soft plastics on jigs the rest of the day (white 3" GULP swimming mullets, Z-Man DieZel MinnowZ's in Opening Night, and Slayer Lures SST paddle tails in cockroach). We lost a few to snags and frayed leader but brought over 50 to the boat including a couple of big girls—one 34” and one 31”. The biggest one was caught tight to the mangroves on a water swept point. I saw a little boil, tossed to it and caught a small snook. It was apparent that a bigger one was lurking, so after releasing the under slot fish, I made a second cast with the top water plug. Boom! We also caught a handful of reds and trout to complete the slam and had eight chunky Goliath Grouper pull drag. What a way to start the summer! Here are a few photographs from the day.
