I would send a note to Outlaw on the forum...he's a master welder and can make anything.... Also, I would suggest you tie down transom to the stringers with braces now that you have it open...this would reinforce the stern...just an idea. Ralf - outlaw has made several items for me and i have seen his work on a tank. dc

X2, I have had him make me a few things for me as well and all have been perfect spot on, including an aluminum center console, just from a drawing! You send him a drawing with correct measurements he can build it!!

I know you said poly and that would be my first choice, but an aluminum tank coated with rhino liner would be a decent option.
dfmcintosh
We are considering aluminum again mostly bc we cannot find a poly tank that has senders, pickups etc that would land under the console. I want an inspection port that is functional but under the console. If we go aluminum we will treat with alodine (Sp?) and coal tar epoxy I think. Researching that now. Fishingfrenzy129
What a great story behind this boat. Awesome you guys are restoring it together to last another 30+ years. Keep the updates and pictures coming! I have a 94’ and I’m sure this will be in my future at some point, just hopefully not anytime soon lol

Work has gotten in the way of updates, but I believe materials are piling up in my living room so another push is on the way!
dfmcintosh
Finally got the 6lb density foam in the stringers. Holy mother that stuff is strong! After we chat and shaved the foam, I spread thickened epoxy over the foam to level it out. We also glassed the stringers over. It was a couple days of hot miserable work. It’s over 100 degrees here and wearing a suit is absolute torture but we are both sick in the
whichwaysup
That looks great! Amazing work! Did you modify the stringer design at all?

We didn’t modify the stringer other than put higher density foam in the stringers and eliminate the bilge pump hose going through the starboard stringer. It’s now fully sealed. I considered putting limber holes through to the bilge but we are putting foam back in between the hatch liners and the hull so there will be continuous foam outside of the stringer back to the transom and decided that there’s no way for water to get there unless the boat sinks. dfmcintosh
Holy moly Andy it’s been hot. I needed some motivation today so I mounted a new gemlux stainless through hull just to stare at.
dfmcintosh
First pic is a pile of 1/2” foam and honeycomb core with a bag of milled glass on top. second pic is of the tube full of g10 fiberglass plate from McMaster Carr. They will be used as ledgers underneath the existing/remaining cockpit deck so that when we install the new sole it will register and glue down to that. Will take pics when we get there. my dad and I are discussing getting a transducer that shoots through the hull. Any opinions?

dfmcintosh
Making the hatch liners out of airex foam panels sandwiched in 1708 and epoxy. They will be but jointed as shown in the drawing, afterwards fillets pulled in the inside corners, outside corners radiused and then glassed over inside and out. All panels cut to exact size, glass cut a little oversized. Making the panels up on the tables covered in dry erase board material. Once it’s cured, we will trim excess glass then build the boxes and glass again with CSM. Spent hours just cutting the core, glass and Peel ply. Should have some finished panels to show soon, then the whole hatch liner assembled.

dfmcintosh
Hatches are original and being reused. Hatch liners we had to butcher to get our cap off the hull. The hatch liner bottoms were bonded to the stringers with so much glass and resin we could not get the cap off without cutting them up. I am just building new hatch liners/boxes. The front 2 are becoming one huge box with a divider we can put in, but we will now store a swim ladder in there.
dfmcintosh
Peel ply is cool! Our test panel is nearly perfectly smooth under the peel ply, this should cut down on a lot of fairing and sanding on the insides of the hatch boxes
dfmcintosh
All hatch box parts cut and laminated with epoxy and 1708. Trimmed and ready to glue and begin making them look like something

Moderator
What talent !! Thanks for sharing.. MM
dfmcintosh
Talent is pushing it! We are stumbling along, learning as we go. We have basically built the boxes which will become the hatch liners and ordered tank, bunch of hardware, custom console and other miscellaneous stuff. It has been in the 100’s lately in our part of Texas and I cannot stand to be working in my warehouse or much of anything besides the work I already have to do so we are a little slow now. Once fuel tank arrives, we will pick it up I’m sure. We also had a lot of head scratching on how to rebuild things and make them serviceable in the future. Ie. What to do with the through hull stuff for tabs and power pole? Before, the hoses went through the bilge and in and out of the rear hatch and out through the hull. It was a poor installation that we did. I am building in a rigging tube for the Lenco on the port side and planning on putting in stainless bulkhead fittings for the power pole also port side that are flush to the inside of hull and short hoses will be attached outside running to the PP cylinder. Everything will run behind the hatches and will be hidden. Pics will explain better once installed. Can’t say how much staring and thinking goes into this to avoid the “compromise” that people always talk about with boats. We want it a certain way and are figuring out how to make it happen while we have everything opened up. new ubolts for stern. No real reason for larger radius. these G10 fiberglass flat plate pieces will be the ledgers under the existing perimeter of decking and will register the new deck. They will be glued in place with thickened epoxy another shot of prelaminated foam cored These last 3 are of the aft port hatch and the area behind where the tabs and PP plumbing/wiring goes through the hull and hardware through mounts etc. instead of through bolting with nuts and washers as before (which left holes in the hatch for access, we will have captured nuts buried in epoxy for mounting and chases/rigging tubes for everything behind this hatch liner. I need to take more pics, we are farther along. I’ll update the thread next week. Supposed to mercifully get back into the 90’s next week! More to come!
dfmcintosh
large hatch liner/box I am installing 316 ss bulkhead fittings for the power pole, this is the beginning of it. 90’s on the way. built an inside radius sander today. Works pretty well but it is a calorie burner!
whichwaysup
Dang, you guys are a serious inspiration. Those boxes look WAY better than I expected. Been using my MA a TON since she was rebuilt, and every day ,every trip, I am reminded that it was worth the 2 years and all the money. Something about that wide beam, super wide gunnels, and that amazing ride makes fishing so much more enjoyable. Soon, you guys will be back on her again and she'll be better than new. I hope you look back on the rebuild with the same "dang, that was so worth it" reaction that I do.
dfmcintosh
Glad to hear you are fishing yours and enjoying/appreciating it that much more. I know we will too. Hell, one of the motivations is just being anxious to get back on her again and catch some fish! I laid the last layer of glass inside the big box today. 1.5 oz csm and epoxy. Laid glass on the smaller hatch outside corners also after rounding over the edges. Next step is fairing the big box and prepping for paint. Don’t like working inside of things but it’s a necessary evil and I will try to bust it out as quick as I can while my dad is off fishing with his buddy at the coast!
dfmcintosh
New tank and inside radii roughed out inside the hatch boxes. Next step is high build primer. Getting closer. Wire, fuel hose shipped. New deck being laid up, will take pics. Trolling motor ordered. We are still plugging away and I should have some very rewarding updates soon.
