what module is that?

It is for the LSS1 sidescan.  To run the sidescan on the Gen1 you needed it.

According to Lowrance you can run up to a Gen 3 from the Structure Scan HD module. They did not tell me it was needed or not needed for the Gen 3.
I just left it in place when I went from the Gen 1 to the Gen 3. Maybe I should have plugged the Structure Scan transducer directly to the head unit.

Can't really answer that question. I looked on the transducer and the patent numbers were the only ones found. It is the transducer that was shipped with the unit from Lowrance.

Is the transducer a lss-1 or lss-2?

Just talked to Lowrance. Transducer is a LSS-2.
