Prop 140 Suzuki 18’ Hewes LT (Redfisher smooth sides)

Any ideas on what prop I should be looking at for a 2000 18’ Hewes Light Tackle (this hull turned into the Redfisher) with a Suzuki 140? I am going to be getting the engine installed next week as long as everything works out with scheduling. The place I am getting it from allows swap outs for the first 20hrs free of charge. So even a list I should be trying would help. Never really had to prop a boat prior to this as they were already set up. Thanks in advance.

A factory Suzuki 3-blade stainless prop is a good prop, and made specifically for the 2.59:1 gear ratio on the DF140A.  You could start with a 19 pitch, to go easy on the motor for the first couple hours of break-in, and see how it runs.  But, you will more likely end up with a 21 pitch.  If you want expert advice on additional performance prop options, you could give Marcus at Powertech a call.  He is a.k.a. Funky Monkey on this forum.

Correction - The Suzuki prop for your rig comes in 14 x 20 pitch and 14 x 22 pitch.  You ultimately want your DF140A to get as close to 6200 RPM as possible at wide open throttle with a light load (just you onboard with about a half tank of gas).  You shouldn't take your new motor up to full thottle except once after the first 5 hours of break-in, and then continue the break-in procedure.  I found some performance bulletins on the Suzuki website.  Looks like you could start with the 20 pitch, but might need to move up to the 22 pitch.  Here are the performance test results that you could compare with the size and weight of your Hewes Light Tackle:

Me and you both man! I am almost done getting the boat ready. Waiting on some stuff to get out of powder coating. Will post some stuff up on people I used for parts and the repower. Numbers etc so it is easier for others. Was happy I had the responses here. Really helped me with my decision.

Awesome!  Just checked the prop slip calculator, with your new setup.  After break-in, with a light load, if you can turn the 22 pitch (cupped) prop at 6200 max recommended RPM, with the 2.59 gearcase, with 6% slip, your boat should top out at 48 mph.  Just speculation of course, but fun to think about...

Geeviam!! You nailed the numbers thus far. Only 2hrs into break in. Havent really tested top end other than a few seconds. Top out is 46mph with a 14x20 pitch. Hole shot is on point. Havent ran with live well full yet, but had full of fuel and me on board (#200). They said that I could potentialy raise the motor 3/4” but would hit platform, or go to 22pitch and lose some hole shot but they believed the 20pitch was gna be good. Supposedly the top end could go up some after break in. I am deffinently in unchartered waters here. Thanks for all your help man.

Thanks man!  I was excited for you when you decided to go with the Zuke 140.  Sounds like it will be a good performer, and from the looks of it in the picture you posted on the other thread, the stern sits nice and high in the water with the boat at rest (no squat & a good shallow draft).  The whole setup looks awesome!

Hey Shallow, I just repowered my 95 LT 20 with a Zuke 140. The marina that installed it did a beautiful job and was very easy to work with and as a Yamaha fanboy, I was hesitant to out a Suzuki on the boat. Every day I run her, I being made more and more of a believer. I'm noticing, though, that the performance is not where it should be. I'm topping out at 32 mph at 6200, which is WOT. I'm wondering where you landed with your prop. In speaking with the marina, they agree that I should be getting up around 40 mph. If I do a hole shot (and I'm not a cowboy), the motor revs and acts like it's not digging in, regardless of how I trim the motor and the tabs. It came with a Suzuki 3 blade 21 pitch. I don't get porpoising at all.

Sorry for such a long message, just looking for advice from someone with a comparable setup. Thanks for any help!

Do you have a jack plate?  A short setback JP will sometimes raise your motor height from 1.5" to 2" higher than it should be.  If that's the case, you would need more cup added to your prop to prevent slippage.  Just a "first thought"
