The Snook and Gamefish Foundation encourages you to report fish kills to the FWC. Report the killed fish to FWC’s Fish Kill hotline. Capt. Troy Posted January 5, 2018 Author Report Share Posted January 5, 2018 Some are already dying in the Tarpon Springs area as of yesterday. Captain Ed walker posted video on his face book page of a bunch of snook in a lagoon in Tarpon Springs that were huddled together in about a foot of water. You can see several dead ones on the bottom belly up. Maybe not as bad as 2010 but the water has been at or below the threshold for 3 days now and we have another cold night to deal with and daytime highs in the bay area are doing very little to warm things up. At least the wind has laid off and we have sun today for some radiation heating. 53 degree water is being reported at many stations in the Tampa area. I just got more video of the Lagoon in Tarpon Springs that had many small snook in it yesterday that I posted about. Captain Ed Walker a very well known and respected fishing guide in the area just sent me some more video. Last night a bunch of adult snook came into the same lagoon last night. The lagoon in Tarpon Springs that I spoke of was the scene of an FWC bust yesterday. Guy was cast netting from the bank and filleting them and filling a big tub. He got charged with over the limit, out of season,illegal methods and undersized From Crystal River. I checked on this. This is an old pic, Sick joke. Beak Boater Posted January 8, 2018 Report Share Posted January 8, 2018 Their are concerns for those Snook that do make it through this cold snap. The lower water temps weaken their immune systems and makes the fish more susceptible to bacteria and infections. The next couple of weeks will tell the story. Hopefully a good one for our fisheries. VS-MasterAngler Posted January 9, 2018 Report Share Posted January 9, 2018 I Was out yesterday and today south Pine Island Sound and mouth of the Caloosahatchee River, average water temp was 59 and 61 degrees respectively and only saw one dead bonnethead on a flat and a large dead sail cat in a deep canal. I did see a ton of big Snook in groups... but couldn't get a single one to eat the DOA and Gulp shrimp I offered up. I may have had a better chance if I would've had a few nice medium to large live shrimp. All in all a good day on the water and had to stop to catch a couple trout to bend the rod.... Water didn't break 55 in Naples bay,so I hope the north ENP is still fine. Air Temps today are close to 80,so the water temps will rise for a while at least. polliwog Posted January 11, 2018 Report Share Posted January 11, 2018 Just got back from trip around Naples and south inside bays, The good news is the water temps are 64 in the areas back from the gulf outer shores. I had a few good size snook follow my plug almost to the boat,but were very lethargic and didn't strike. Damm. Good to see them anyway.
