Alex6
hello, its Alex with the 78 hewes. just wanted to give you a heads up when you start laying the stringers make sure you soak the tabs on the under side and the top side because it takes a lot for the resin to get through and stick. 80 bonefisher
Have most of the stringers in and the suports for the under deck fuel tank. Got the baitwell that we neeed to modify that will sit where the old fuel tank was. Got a bit more fairing to do but were getting there. Fuel tank should be in next week or two then the plumbing for the bait well and the deck. squidmotion
moving along nicely!! i dig this stuff, and will be soon building a new glades style, tiller skiff, if i can find the time! have the plans, epoxy, outboard, just need the plywood, and time, and that is in the mail! no, i really don't need another boat. or the maintenance or the titling, or insurance... but it will take us to new places, and spike and i just want to build a boat. questions: are you going to keep the sponsons as livewells or storage, or fill them with foam? what color is it going to be when you finish it? what outboard did you decide on, or did you answer that already? i think you guys restoring these things is extremely cool, and Mr. Hewes would be smiling... keep up the good work! it's looking great! 80 bonefisher
We will use the sponsons for storage. We plugged all the holes in them to try to get more floatation. We think we are going to paint the hull a light grey with white inside the deck but not positive yet. Putting a new 115 E-tec on it.
80 bonefisher
Found more damage to the transom we thought was ok. Tore it out and and are going to use Nidacore poured transom. Should be done in the next 2 weeks. Today we split the liner from the hull and poured in closed cell foam to stiffen up the sides of the the hull. Incredible difference in hull stiffness. 80 bonefisher
Finished the transom today. Two layers of 2808 and one 1708 then poured Nida-core transom compound. Easiest transom I ever built. That stuff works great and is easy to use. 80 bonefisher
Took a little break, my son has been on spring break from college so we put the project on hold for a month or two. We have the rear boxes back on and faired out and we built a recessed radio box in the console. Should be hitting it hard toward the end of July. Next step is to install the custom under deck fuel cell and start putting the live well and deck on.
Its A Toss Up
Wow! Youre boat is coming along nicely. Unfortunatley I am not a Master fibergl***men as yourself and have put my 1977 Hewes Bonefisher into the shop to get a full restoration. Everything has been removed and is just the shell. I have two baitwells in the back of my boat like the ones i think your removed and was thinking about taking them off if there is benefits. Are you going to put your back on? Will this effect draft and boutancy?
80 bonefisher
Sorry it took so long to reply. We have had the project on hold for a little while but are back at it now. We put the 2 rear boxes back on but will not be using them for bait wells. We just about have the new well in that will be under the seat.I holds about 26 gallons. We will be starting the Nidacore deck next week.
