HewesYourDaddy
Is this steering wheel pressed on? I've never had to remove one and I'm trying to figure it out.
Nauti
I'm guessing you'll need a wheel puller. You can borrow one from many of the chain autoparts stores for free.
mdemott
Steering wheels are not pressed. You will need a steering wheel puller. I had one on a boat that would not come off even with heat. Had to take the helm off.
RipTide
Can see the woodruff key has some rust around it. Your in for some fun pulling that one. Soak it down with some PB Blaster and let sit for a night. Definitely get a wheel puller if it will work. Problem I had was I couldn't get the dang puller jaws behind the housing or anything else to get a grip on. Had to remove entire helm.
2000 RF 16
Soak with pb blaster Put the nut back on just so it's flush with the top of the threads Heat wheel some if needed Have a helper pull up on the wheel Hit or tap with hammer on nut
SCFD rtrd.
You can buy a cheap wheel puller from Harbor Freight ($8). Problem is, it won't lock under the steering wheel. Use several wraps of 1/4" rope on each leg of the puller to secure it to the steering wheel. Soak overnight with PB Blaster, then start pulling. Lap it Up
X2. This is how I have pulled many a steering wheel.
Sea Larry
Buy the kit of 3 pullers from HF. One of them will work. Not Perfect. Place the nut back on the shaft.
flatfoot
As stated above, use PBB and the gear puller from HF. This is the one I've used many times all with success: http://t.harborfreight.com/8-in-three-jaw-gear-puller-69224.html

2000 RF 16
And the winner is ........ How did you remove the wheel?
nicecast
Soak with pb blasterPut the nut back on just so it's flush with the top of the threads Heat wheel some if needed Have a helper pull up on the wheel Hit or tap with hammer on nut This has always worked for me. Only thing I'd add is go to Ace and get a nut just for this purpose - so you can wack on it hard and then throw it away. Make sure it is flush with the top of the threaded post - them hammer away! HewesYourDaddy
And the winner is ........How did you remove the wheel? Sorry it took so long to respond. Holidays and work have kept me busy. I sprayed with some penetrating lube, removed the thru-bolts that held the gearbox to the helm, and gave it a strong whack with a line hammer. Separated pretty easily. Now I have another issue. I cannot get the shaft of the steering cable out of the steering tube on the engine mount. The smaller shaft slides out about 8", then the larger end that the steering arm connects to won't pull thru. Any ideas?

HewesYourDaddy
Trust me, I though about it! I did get a cut off wheel on the cable. Too many bends to deal with. 2 cuts and it pulled out nicely.
